On the left side of the Virtual Classroom window, you'll see buttons and controls. Here's what each of these buttons and controls do...

If your instructor has his or her web camera turned on, you can see them in a box near the top of the left hand column.

The next thing you'll see is the list of Presenters — another word for "instructor"— who are leading this session. The microphone next to a Presenter's name shows that the instructor "has the microphone" — they are speaking.

The next area is the list of Participants. Next to each participant's name, there is room for the following:

  • When you see a microphone next to a participant's name, that means that the instructor has given that person the microphone. When the microphone is next to your name, that means that you have the microphone.

Even though there is a microphone connected to your computer, other participants won't be able to hear you unless the instructor "gives you the microphone" on this screen. To get the instructor's attention, you raise your hand by clicking on the raised hand button along the top of the screen.

When you see the microphone next to your name, that means the instructor has given you the microphone. To speak, hold down the "Control" key on your keyboard... it is in the bottom row of keys, and it is labeled "Ctrl." When you are done talking, take your finger off of the Control key, so your instructor can speak to you.
  • A green check mark, a red X, a yellow happy face, and the clapping hands next to your name shows you, the instructor and the other members of your Virtual Classroom session how you have answered a question, or how you feel at the moment.

Following the list of Participants are the totals for Green Check Marks ("Yes" answers), Red X'es ("No" answers), raised hands, and the number of people in the session.

At the bottom of the left hand column is the Agenda. This is a list of the topics that the Instructor will cover in your session. Checkmarks in this list show you how much progress you have made, and how much further you need to go.
